Anthony Tetard is the definition of a docker. A member of the Fédération Nationale des Ports et Docks (FNPD - National Ports and Docks Federation) which belongs to the powerful French Confédération Générale du Travail (CGT - General Confederation of Labor); he is also the European Zone Coordinator of the International Dockworkers Council (IDC). He was recently in the FNDP central office where we had a chance to have a casual chat with him.

We have all heard the phrase “Statistics don’t Lie.” When it comes to lost time accidents, deck crafts like lashers, deckman and even some mechanics are at or near the top of the most often injured waterfront workers. In fact, recent data compiled by USMX shows that 20% of all injuries on the waterfront were to lashers working on deck and one of the biggest hazards they face is that of dislodged, falling twistlocks. Some of these injuries can be severe, leading to long term disabilities and, as happens from time to time, some end up in court as the subject of third party litigation.

It is with a heavy heart that the International Dockworkers Council (IDC) mourns the loss of Philando Castile, fatal victim to a police shooting this past week in Minnesota, USA. The IDC urges all to take a stand against widespread racial and economic inequality, which exists within the United States and in many places.

Port workers, wharfies and longshoremen are poised to begin their activities for the dockers’global day of action happening Thursday 7 July between 8:00- 9:00 am (local time). Dockers in ports on five continents will be part of the union action day, including the thousands of dockers belonging to the International Dockworkers' Council (IDC), the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) and the European Transport Workers' Federation (ETF).
