The Socialist Party has agreed to delay the approval of the bill for the 48/2003 Ports Law. All port worker unions in Spain - Coordinadora, UGT, CC.OO., ELA and CIG have decided - for the moment, to call off the strike planned to start on 22 March. The Socialist party seems willing to negotiate the changes in the bill. The decision came after a meeting yesterday with the socialist party spokesperson.
One of the main challenges for IDC in the next two years is adapting workers to new technologies and automation in port operations. The new trend in ports is to implement semi-automated terminals. This could translate into a big loss of work places, but it could also bring a new horizon to create other types of jobs.

Goya was unanimously re-elected last Wednesday as the International Dockworkers
Council’ new General Coordinator during the IDC 4th General Assembly that took
place in Charleston, South Carolina on the 23rd and 24th of February.
Acknowledgement to the Charleston Five in the IDC Assembly
The IDC 4th General Assembly, taking place in Charleston, South
Carolina, will be officially closing the meeting
with an acknowledgment to the work of the Charleston Five members who were arrested for over
two years for taking part in the demonstrations against Nordana ten years ago in Charleston.

The International
Dockworkers Council’s 4th General Assembly starts today in Charleston (SC) - USA. The Assembly will last for two days with the
election of the main IDC officers and a discussion on the future lines of work.
The IDC 4th
Assembly is being hosted this year by the ILA Local 1422 in Charleston, South
Carolina. Invited authorities from Charleston will be opening the ceremony,
together with speeches from Julian García - IDC former General Coordinator, Ken
Riley – ILA Local 1422President, Antolin Goya – IDC General Coordinator and IDC Zone Coordinators.
